"Don’t call me an academician, please call me a teacher."
"I prefer to say’ comfort after death’ and’ comfort’, because it is my greatest happiness to see that the students have achieved impressive results and surpassed me one by one." -Qian Yi
"Don’t call me an academician, please call me a teacher. Because being a teacher is something I really like. " Qian Yi, a professor of environmental engineering in Tsinghua University, always waved his hand and refused these "high hats" when he was introduced as the first academician of China Academy of Engineering and the first female academician in Tsinghua University. What she likes best is the hat called "Teacher", which has been worn for nearly sixty years.
Qian Yi is a natural teacher. Once, she gave a speech to young students, and the host prepared chairs, but she refused. After talking for more than an hour, the host moved to a stool for fear that her body could not bear it. When someone asks a question, she will unconsciously stand up and answer.
On the podium, Qian Yi has a gorgeous head, dressed in a light plain silk shirt, and his eyes behind gold-rimmed glasses are full of wisdom and smile.
From hair to white hair, she is the memory of several generations of Tsinghua people. Now 81-year-old, she is still devoted to the three-foot platform, thin and thin, but she is honored as "Mr. Big".
Six academicians in one subject, half of them are teachers.
"One six academicians, half of them are teachers." Qian Yi’s family background is Xuan He. Qian Mu, a master of Chinese studies, is her father, and Qian Weichang, a famous scientist, is her cousin.
Qian Yi said that he valued the latter part more. "My father and mother are teachers. Two uncles, two menstruation and two uncles are all teachers. I have three brothers and one sister, plus my spouse, a total of 10 people, nine and a half of whom are teachers. There are six teachers in the next generation … "
When I was a child, Qian Yi lived in Suzhou Courtyard with more than a dozen families. "Neighbors know that their mother is a teacher, so they send their unattended children to my house for evening self-study, and their mothers walk around and help each child with their homework." Life is hard, but the image of mother’s teacher has taken root in Qian Yi’s heart.
In 1959, Qian Yi graduated with honors and stayed in school, starting his teaching career. After nearly 60 years of teaching, now 81-year-old, she is still fighting in the front line of teaching. Many people don’t understand, and Qian Yi’s answer is simple and simple: "Teachers are my favorite career in my life and my only profession."
In the 1990s, Qian Yi, who was exposed to the concept of "sustainable development", deeply felt the responsibility to spread the concept in China. After returning to Tsinghua, she wrote an outline and compiled teaching materials with the support of the school, and finally opened this course in 1998. After class, this course became a national excellent course. Because of the large number of students, it was changed from once a year to twice.
Concerned about Qian Yi’s health, the college sent three teachers to attend the class of "Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development" with her. "I am relieved to have a young teacher in class with me." Qian Yi said, "I want to make sure that if I really can’t speak in the future, this course will never stop."
Lin Chupei, a 2013 undergraduate of the Environmental College who has graduated, was deeply impressed by the course he took four years ago: "This course is a compulsory course of our college and a guiding course that leads us into this subject field. Through this course, for the first time, I understand the mission of the words’ love my environment and make my career bigger’. "
It is the greatest happiness to be comforted after death.
Qian Yi, standing on the podium, took pictures in memories of youth of Tsinghua people from generation to generation.
Qian Yi once said: "China always said that’ the afterlife is awesome’, and using’ awe’ and’ fear’ is to affirm the achievements of young people. But what I prefer to say is the comfort of’ afterlife’ and’ comfort’, because it is my greatest happiness to see that the students have achieved impressive results and surpassed me one by one. "
In the past 60 years, Qian Yi has brought a batch of master students and doctoral students. Some of the students have embarked on the road of teaching and educating people, some have taken root in environmental specialty and become listed companies, and some have quietly contributed in the forefront of environmental protection.
Behind the modest image, Qian Yi has an insistence on academic seriousness. She set a principle for herself: without the whole process of research, students’ papers will be published without their own names. Later, the school stipulated that students must have at least one article jointly signed by the tutor, and she reluctantly agreed to sign one.
Revising papers, guiding experiments, and opening public courses, Qian Yi always does things for students. Qian Yi cares about students and urges them to contribute to the development of the country. She never speaks out about her patriotic enthusiasm, and the patriotic responsibility has penetrated into her words and deeds. She often said: "The domestic stage is too big, there are too many people in need, and hobbies should follow the needs of the country … The position is not important, the key is how you work hard."
The young teachers in the department and Qian Yi also tried their best to support and help. She hopes to build a team of high-level teachers as soon as possible, so that the education career that loves life can continue to develop. To this end, Qian Yi always personally guides young teachers, whether lecturing or compiling textbooks.
Willing to spit silk for environmental protection
"We who do environmental undertakings are a bit like Don Quixote, working towards a goal. Although we may not be able to see the goal achieved in our lives, we still don’t change our minds." For Qian Yi, the podium and environmental protection are two careers that she is willing to devote her life to.
Qian Yi has been devoted to the research and development of high-efficiency and low-consumption wastewater treatment technology suitable for China’s national conditions for a long time, and has done a lot of fruitful work in the biodegradation characteristics, treatment mechanism and technology of refractory organic matter, and actively advocated the development and utilization of non-traditional water resources, contributing new theories, methods and technologies to the development and sustainable utilization of water resources and making important contributions to the prevention and control of water pollution in China.
In the past 20 years, she has devoted herself to advocating and promoting the research and practice of cleaner production, circular economy and sustainable development. She is one of the earliest scholars who advocated and studied cleaner production and circular economy in China, and has made important contributions in participating in national environmental legislation, putting forward policy suggestions and establishing demonstration provinces and cities.
Not long ago, Tsinghua University Ecological Civilization Research Center was established, with Qian Yi as its director. Why do you have to find something to do when you are old? "Teacher Qian is like a spring silkworm, willing to spit all silk for the cause of environmental protection." Her students answered like this.
"Ecological civilization construction should be integrated into economic construction, political construction, cultural construction and social construction, and more in-depth research work is essential." Talking about the topic of the research center, Qian Yi is radiant. "Interdisciplinary research is a great advantage of the research center. We will make good use of this advantage to realize the organic integration between different fields such as engineering, science, liberal arts and art, build a complete theoretical system of ecological civilization, explore ways to build ecological civilization, and contribute to the decision-making of national ecological civilization construction."
